Village Hall

Since 2015, the Village has implemented a variety of emergency preparedness efforts with the aim of ensuring safety for all. These efforts include the generation and distribution of a new Emergency Preparedness Plan and the creation of an evacuation road, which was found necessary following Summer 2015 severe storm which cut off roadways and trapped residents within the Village.

Since 2014, communication efforts between the Clerk’s Office, the Building Department, the Engineering Department and the Public Safety have been greatly improved. The result is an even enforcement and application of the Village Code. While we never want to see a fellow resident cited with a violation, the Village government has worked diligently to ensure that services are offered to support those residents that require compliance work. Where leniency promotes progress, compromises are sought together to attain compliance. We ask our fellow neighbors and residents to be mindful of their neighbors who do pay taxes and fees to maintain safety standards within their homes. The Village of Poquott strives for fair treatment of all, regardless of past, present, and future.

The Village of Poquott Department of Public Safety also serves as the village Code Enforcement Unit. Enforcement officers patrol village parks and roadways, respond to calls for emergency and non-emergency services, and enforce certain aspects of both the Poquott Village Code and the New York State Uniformed Building and Fire Code. All Enforcement officers employed by the Village are trained in basic first aid, including CPR, and the use of the Automatic External Defibrillator which is carried by the officers at all times. Enforcement officers have direct two-way radio contact with the Suffolk County Police Department and in accordance with the New York State Criminal Procedure Laws, may issue appearance tickets for violations of local law.

POLICE, FIRE & MEDICAL EMERGENCIES
Residents are advised that, in a police emergency situation, they should contact the Suffolk County Police Department by dialing 911 in the case of either a fire, or a medical emergency, residents should contact the Setauket Fire District by dialing 631-941-4441. Give your Name, Address, Nearest Cross Street, and Phone Number. Stay on the phone and listen for all directions. In a police emergency, your first telephone call should be to 911. In the case of a fire or other physical emergency, Get All Individuals Out Of The House and be prepared to direct first responders. Do Not Go Back Into The Residence.

TRAFFIC SAFETY
The most obvious reason why road safety is so important is that many lives are at stake when you’re on the road. While we strive to improve village traffic by way of monitoring and reporting, residents making complete stops at all village stop signs and driving with a cautious awareness of our pedestrians, bicyclists and children is the true key to keeping our roads both safe and enjoyable.

CODE ENFORCEMENT
Property Maintenance
is an important part of our community. All homeowners are responsible for maintaining their property to the specifications in the Village Code and the New York State Property Maintenance Code. Doing so protects property values and improves the appearance of our village.

HOUSE CHECKS
Residents may request that the Department of Public Safety conduct courtesy house checks of their residence when they are away on vacation for an extended period of time. The form to request a House Check can be downloaded from the village website or obtained from the Village Clerks Office.
