Stormwater Manangement

UNDERSTANDING OUR COMMITTMENT TO CLEAN WATER

Welcome, residents! You’ve reached the central hub for stormwater management efforts here in the Village of Poquott. As part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining and improving the quality of our water bodies, we adhere to the guidelinesset forth by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation under the State Pollution Discharge Elimination System (SPDES) for Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4).

MS4

What is MS4?

The MS4 program is designed to reduce pollutants in our stormwater runoff and preserve our water resources. Stormwater runoff occurs when precipitation from rain or snowmelt flows over the ground. This runoff can pick up debris, chemicals, dirt, and other pollutants, transporting them into a sewer system or directly into a lake, stream, river, wetland, or coastal water. The goal of our MS4 program is to tackle this pollution at its source.

Key Components of the MS4 Program Include:

  • Public Education and Outreach: We strive to inform and engage our community about the impacts of stormwater discharges on water bodies and the steps that can be taken to reduce pollutants.
  • Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination: This involves identifying and eliminating sources of non-stormwater discharges that can degrade water quality.
  • Construction Site Stormwater Runoff Control: Implementing strategies to prevent harmful pollutants from construction activities from affecting our waterways.
  • Post-Construction Stormwater Management: Ensuring that measures are in place to manage runoff from new developments and redevelopment projects.
  • Pollution Prevention/Good Housekeeping: Promoting better practices in municipal operations to reduce the amount of pollutants in stormwater runoffs.
